have asked to see some of my writing. i used to be quite shy about sharing it, but after tons of workshopping classes that force you to share your work and hear criticism, i’m now more open about my writing.

anyways, below is a poem i picked out from a portfolio i just finished up. it’s a fictional poem based on a really personal experience that my family and i had to endure a few months ago. this version is probably the 15th draft i’ve written thus far, and i will probably write a few more drafts until i’m completely satisfied. also, i won’t post too many of these on here since i really wanted this blog to feature my crappy photos.

It Started at the Meninges

Do you remember organs failing, lungs flailing, choking for air?

Do you remember the flashing lights, sirens,

and the quiet murmurs of the EMTs?

Do you remember if your pockets were barren,

or full of the usual tattered clumps of Kleenex and pennies?

What about the yellow light bathing the living room when you were wheeled out?

Were the crooked picture frames and glass stained crucifix the last thing you saw?

Did Jesus unhinge his arms and wave goodbye to you?

Do you remember the deepest sleep of your life

and how the neurons lazily crept through transmitters down your spine?

Do you remember the web of wires, nestled over you,

needles and syringes fusing into flesh?

Do you remember finally waking up

to the eager faces of the little viejitas hovering over you,

gripping their glassy rosary beads with bony hands?

Do you remember what they asked you?

Do you remember what you saw beneath those papery, purple lids?

And what about the sinking feeling of dismay you felt

when you had to tell them darkness?

But don’t you remember how your heart leapt

after seeing the first shaft of light peeking through the curtains?

What about that first shock of breath, the one that inflated your lungs?

How your throat ached and how your limp, dry tongue

plumped instantly once crystal cold water trickled between your brittle lips?

Don’t you remember how intensely you savored the taste

and how grateful you felt?
